Magda Institute Association Began MI Association training in 2001. MI training includes Kali. As a direct student of Dan Inosanto, the founder received his Kali training from one of the most knowledgeable Filipino Martial Artists ever. |
In 1996, I began training with Sifu Wayne Jackson in Williamsport, Maryland. While Kali was not the focal point of the curriculum, he often included material from Guro Dan Inosanto and other Filipino Martial Arts proponents.
Even before my training with Sifu Wayne ended, I was exposed to even more Kali training via my connection to the Magda Institute Association.
On the professional side of things, I first began teaching in 2001. As the Fitness Director at Headquarters Battalion, Headquarters Marine Corps, Henderson Hall, I launched a martial arts program under the Marine Corps Community Services banner. This program continued until my departure in February 2008.
This time period was instrumental in my professional growth. I taught classes nearly every day of the week; one of which was Kali. I organized seminars; many of which included Kali.
Since 2008, I have mostly taught in the civilian world; except for a brief, several-month stint of teaching aboard Westover Air Reserve Base in 2015; while employed as the Exercise Physiologist.
Throughout my career, I have helped countless men and women develop Kali knowledge, skills and abilities. My most enduring memory:
My best Marine Corps student was sharing yet another personal combat story
from his latest fight in a DC night club. He was a Jersey guy who loved to scrap.
I urged him to be careful as the risk of a knife or gun entering the mix was always a possibility.
In all seriousness, he told me he was confident in his ability to defend against a knife. His confidence stemmed from having learned knife fanning (an introductory idea). I responded with something like, "You can't be serious." He assured me he was.
Since it was right before class and we were in the training room, I grabbed a training dagger and began thrusting very hard angle 1's and 2's. When I was convinced he was sufficiently "riled up," I "ran" an angle 1 into an angle 3 slash in which I dragged the knife across the entire width of his abdomen.
His jaw dropped open!
I said nothing as I turned and walked over to put the dagger back in the training bag.

Resilience or the ability to adapt positively under adverse circumstances is thought to be associated with longevity. Quality movement training can create positive adverse circumstances that promote the development of resilience. This resilience can transcend movement and contribute to a lengthened life.
